This past Sunday, Joanna and I met up with George and Rachel at The Wall in Vista. George gave some great tips and guidance on how to begin. Some important things I've learned:
I also tried the slackline they had set up. Slacklining s essentially a tight-rope activity. I managed to hop on the rope and take a couple of unsteady steps before falling off. I took almost a few dozen tries, but I found it fun. I will definitely try out any slacklines at other gyms when I visit them.
Since I'm new, I only had enough skills (and energy) to try out a few beginner level routes. As good as that was, I had more fun doing some freestyle traversing which is essentially me climbing horizontally along the wall using whatever holds I wanted to use. I was able to traverse about 15 feet until I lost strength and dropped. I will see how far I can get next time as well.
So far, I'm really enjoying this experience. I was only there for one hour, but I found it to be great workout. I'm still feeling the burn in my forearms and legs as I type this 2 days later. Despite this, there is particular con which is the price. It costs about $18 to rent and use the gym for the day. In the end, that's $18 for one hour of exercise/activity which isn't the best value when compared to other ways I could exercise. Joanna and I are shopping around now to find the best deal we can nearby. We are also looking into whether or not it would be worth investing into some shoes.
Regardless, this is definitely the most fun I've had while working out, and we are looking forward to next session.
- Use your legs - don't rely on only our arms for holding on
- Relax - hang from your arms instead of tensing them to save energy
- Know your limits - getting up is literally only half of it because you might need to find a way down
